Harnessing Digital Twins for Sustainable Communities and Economies

The 3DxVERSE project is dedicated to building a sustainable society through realistic visualizations and user-friendly applications based on reliable data. By making plans transparent for both policymakers and citizens, and embracing storytelling to reveal the motivations behind these developments, the project empowers everyone to help shape the future of our cities.

What is 3DxVERSE?

3DxVERSE brings together European cities, airports, researchers, and industry partners to build next-generation Local Digital Twins which are virtual models of real places that help us understand, simulate, and improve the world around us.

By combining real-time data, 3D mapping, AI, and citizen participation, we help communities reduce CO₂ emissions, mange energy consumption, improve mobility, enhance safety, and support better planning for the future.

Our Vision is Simple

A Europe where digital technology empowers people, improves daily life, and protects the planet.

Sustainability

Support the European Green Deal with low-carbon mobility and smart energy use.

Innovation

Use cutting-edge AI, Data Spaces, XR/VR, and interoperable standards.

Inclusion & Trust

Inclusion & Trust, ensure transparency, privacy, security, and citizen participation.

Cities, airports, and communities all face similar challenges

The Challenge We Address

Cities, airports, and communities all face similar challenges:

Fragmented data and incompatible systems

Limited tools to simulate climate, mobility, and energy scenarios

A lack of open reference architectures for Local Digital Twins

Barriers to interoperability across Europe

Growing ethical, privacy, and security expectations

3DxVERSE responds to these needs by developing a state-of-the-art Local Digital Twin Toolbox and a reference architecture aligned with the European Interoperability Framework, ITU Y-MIM standards, EIRA/SIMPL, and the AI Act and NIS2 security requirements.

How 3DxVERSE Works?

Local Digital Twins turn complex data into meaningful insights.

In 3DxVERSE, this process follows the data-to-decision lifecycle:

  1. Collect Data: Energy data, mobility data, airport operations, noise monitoring, weather, energy usage, citizen input, IoT sensors.
  2. Create the Twin: 3D maps, simulations, interactive dashboards, XR/VR visualizations.
  3. Generate Insights: Energy consumption insights, CO₂ reduction scenarios, mobility optimization, environmental impact predictions, operational efficiency insights.
  4. Inform Decisions: For city planners, airport operators, public authorities and ultimately citizens themselves.

What is a Digital Twin?

What is a Digital Twin?

A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of the real world, including physical objects, processes, relationships, and behaviors. It is always an abstraction or model of reality, and with GIS rooted in geography and location we integrate diverse data to map our world, effectively creating a Digital Twin of our environment.

Why Choose a Digital Twin?

GIS (geographic information systems) connects diverse data and systems through geographic location to create a unified view that can be accessed throughout a project’s lifecycle. It enhances data collection, enables real-time visualization, advanced analysis, and automation for forecasting, while supporting collaboration for example, linking sensors to assets to improve maintenance and placing objects in context within a Digital Twin to accelerate business problem solving.
